What goes in & out

Paste text, drop one file or choose it from your device. Read SRT, WebVTT, ASS dialogue events, SBV and plain TXT. Export SRT, VTT or plain text. No upload happens, including to the computer serving this page.

SRT to TXT and VTT to TXT remove timestamps and subtitle markup, keeping dialogue and line order. TXT has no timing: it can be saved as TXT, but cannot become timed subtitles here. Times are never invented.

Timing, styles & limits

Times are parsed as integer milliseconds without rounding. Cue and dialogue line order stay unchanged. ASS centiseconds are padded with a zero. WebVTT uses a WEBVTT header and dot-separated milliseconds; SRT uses comma-separated milliseconds and fresh cue numbers starting at 1. WebVTT cue IDs are kept only in VTT output.

Basic bold, italic and underline tags are kept in timed output. Unsupported styling, positioning and metadata are removed with a visible notice. ASS drawings are rejected. Unordered start times are rejected for VTT output rather than silently sorted.

One file, up to 2 MiB of text and 50,000 cues. File reading accepts UTF-8 (with or without BOM), or UTF-16 with BOM; output is UTF-8. Invalid input stops conversion instead of skipping cues. Large files may pause this tab briefly.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you export.

How do I convert VTT to SRT?+

Paste your WebVTT text or open a .vtt file, then choose SubRip (.srt) under Save as. Conversion happens immediately. Copy the result or download the file.

Can I use this as an ASS to SRT converter?+

Yes, for text Dialogue events in an ASS Events section. Times and event order are kept. ASS styles and override tags are removed with a notice; drawings are not supported. SBV timing blocks are also supported.

Which format rules do you follow?+

WebVTT output follows the W3C WebVTT syntax for header, timestamps and cues. SRT follows the conventional SubRip layout documented by the Library of Congress: sequential numeric counters, comma-separated timecodes, text and a blank line. SRT is not a single formal international standard. This tool does not enforce a character-per-line cap or reflow your captions.

Does anything leave this browser?+

No subtitle text or file is sent anywhere. The page loads only its own HTML, stylesheet and script. Its content security policy blocks network connections. No analytics, external libraries, account or history storage is used. Closing or reloading the tab clears your current text.
